Summary:
The top of the monument contains a bronze sculpture depicting a standing female figure, dressed in classical drapery, holding a laurel wreath in her proper right hand over the head of a kneeling soldier. Both figures turn their heads slightly to the proper right. The soldier kneels on his proper left knee and holds his hat with his proper right hand which rests on his proper right knee. The soldier holds the barrel of a rifle with his proper left hand, the butt of the rifle rests on the ground in front of his proper left knee. A flag on a pole with an eagle at its top is planted behind the two figures.
This sculpture rests atop four Corinthian columns grouped snugly together, with an eagle on each side where the capitals meet. The columns rest on a square middle base trimmed with flowers and vines. The middle base rests on a fluted, oval lower base with a ridged upper rim above a band of floral trim. Two bronze Civil War soldiers stand on top of the oval base, on either side of the columns. The soldier on the right carries a revolver in his proper right hand and a cannon plunger in his proper left hand. The soldier on the left holds a sword handle with his proper right hand and the sheath with his proper left hand. Bronze relief panels depicting battle scenes are installed on the front and back of the oval lower base.
