The butt of the rifle rests on the plinth in front of his proper right foot. His bedroll is slung across his shoulder and cinched together on his proper right hip. On his proper left hip is a pack, probably containing ammunition. The statue stands upon a granite cube approx. 26 x 24 x 24 inches. Sculpted into the granite cube: on the front or west side, a cannon and cannon balls representing the Confederate artillery. On the south side, anchors honoring the navy. On the east front, crossed swords representing the Confederate navy. On the north front, crossed muskets and a soldier's hat. At eye level on the granite shaft, a bronze plaque which pictures a wounded soldier sitting on the ground under a tree and being supported by a woman, who is giving him a drink from a canteen.
