The information provided about this artwork was compiled as part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventories of American Painting and Sculpture database, designed to provide descriptive and location information on artworks by American artists in public and private collections worldwide.
Summary:
An abstract/non-objective sculpture consisting of a serpentine brick wall divided into two segments, which together form a "U" shape. The sculpture rises out of the ground gradually from each end, reaching maximum height near the center. At the point of maximum height the sculpture is segmented. The sculpture is constructed in a way which suggests that the piece continues underground. The contour of the adjacent earth adds to the sense of the sculpture continuing below ground. The sculpture has a primitive quality which the title suggests.
