Included are letters, newspaper clippings, reports, notes, sketches, maps, lists, catalogs, and printed and processed material.
The file is similar to the reference file, 1828-1962. It contains reports of archeological sites, excavations, and collections. It was maintained through all or most of its active life by William Henry Holmes and was used by him for work for both the Department of Anthropology in the National Museum of Natural History and the Bureau of American Ethnology. He included in it some of his own brief notes on collections he examined.
Other than for Holmes, the material included in this file was originally received by Spencer F. Baird, Charles Rau, Thomas Wilson, Otis T. Mason, Frederick W. Hodge, and others. There is material relating to Arizona, California, Canada, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northwest Coast, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Peru, Pueblos, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
