Summary:
This accession consists of the email account of Brandon Brame Fortune, Chief Curator at the National Portrait Gallery. Fortune began her career at the museum in 1987 and her research focused on eighteenth and nineteenth-century American portraiture, such as the work of Charles Willson Peale, and women portraitists of the late nineteenth century. Fortune graduated from Agnes Scott College and received an M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fortune was also interested in modern and contemporary portraiture, leading her to curate a major exhibition of mid-twentieth-century portraits by Elaine de Kooning in 2015 called "Elaine de Kooning: Portraits." She also organized the first two Outwin Boochever Portrait Competitions (2006 and 2009). Fortune's email account consists of approximately 129,921 messages and covers the time period of February 2001 to July 2020. The correspondence documents Fortune's work on research, exhibitions, collections acquisitions, public programs, and other related areas. Materials are in electronic format.
