The Office of Equal Employment and Supplier Diversity's mission is to promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the Smithsonian Institution's workforce, programs, and activities; to advocate the use of small businesses and historically underutilized small businesses; and to ensure compliance with the applicable Federal Equal Employment Opportunity mandates. The beginning of the Office came about with the appointment of Joseph A. Kennedy as the Director of the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity in 1968. Kennedy served until 1972 when he retired and was succeeded by Archie D. Grimmett. In 1973 the name of the Office changed to the Office of Equal Opportunity.
Grimmett served as Director from 1972-1976, when he was succeeded by Will Douglas, Jr. in 1977. Douglas, Jr. was Director until 1991 and Robert L. Osborne was Acting Director in 1992. Era L. Marshall was appointed Director in 1992. In that same year, the Office changed its name to the Office of Equal Employment and Minority Affairs. In 2020, the Office was renamed the Office of Equal Employment and Supplier Diversity. At the end of 2022 Marshall retired and Rudy D. Watley was appointed acting director, 2023- .
