Summary:
This accession consists of the records of Gary Sturm, Curator Emeritus at the National Museum of American History (NMAH), and document his curatorial activities, the division's collections, presentations, professional interests, and publications while at NMAH and after he retired in 2009. Sturm started at the museum in 1975 as a clerk typist in the then National Museum of History and Technology, Division of Musical Instruments and moved from there to be a technical assistant, a museum technician, a museum specialist, a collections manager in what became the Division of Musical History, then Assistant Chair, and then on to become Assistant Chair for Special Projects in the Division of Cultural History, and lastly retiring as Chair of the Division of Music, Sports and Entertainment. He also served as the Executive Director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society. His primary interests lay in bowed stringed instruments, in particular violins. Materials include correspondence, collection records, budget records, grant proposals, publication records, presentations, images, and other related records. Materials are in electronic format.
