Summary:
The album contains a photographic record of the first visit of Smithsonian scientists and administrators to Cuba following the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The 1977 visit was hosted by the Cuban Academy of Sciences and was facilitated by Dr. Alberado Moreno, Director of the Havana Zoo, a colleague of Theodore Reed, Director of the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park (NZP). Other participants on the trip included Ross Simons and Dr. Porter Kier, Director of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). The Smithsonian group toured the institutes of the Academy in Havana, visited the Zapata Swamp, and viewed the Zoo and Aquarium. The group also engaged in discussions with officials of the Cuban Academy of Sciences which led to a subsequent Memorandum of Understanding between the Smithsonian and the Cuban Academy which was signed by Secretary Ripley in Havana. The Memorandum of Understanding led to a continuing exchange of scholars between the Smithsonian and other U.S. institutions and Cuba.
