In 1990 the National Museum of Natural History created a new position, Associate Director for Public Programs. The Associate Director oversees the planning and development of all museum exhibitions, educational programs, public relations, marketing, visitor services and digital media programs. The incumbent reports to the Director of the Museum. Robert D. Sullivan was appointed to the post and served 1990-2006. In 2007 the office was renamed the Associate Director for External Affairs and Public Programs and in 2013 the office was renamed the Associate Director for Public Engagement. Elizabeth Duggal was appointed as Associate Director in 2007 and served until 2014. After 2014, the position of Associate Director for Public Engagement was abolished.
