The position of Director for National Programs was created in 2000. The incumbent was responsible for oversight of programs that take the Smithsonian outside Washington, D.C., including the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, the National Associates, and the Smithsonian Affiliates Program. Herma Hightower held the Director's post, 2000-2003; Richard Kurin was Acting Director, 2004-2007. The office was discontinued in 2007. The Director for National Programs reported to the Under Secretary for American Museums and National Programs.
