Smithsonian Institution, Office of Fellowships, http://www.si.edu/ofg, January 24, 2002
The Office of Fellowships and Internships was first organized as the Office of Fellowships and Grants in 1978, which was formed from the former Office of Academic Studies and the Foreign Currency Program. The Office of Fellowships and Grants was renamed the Office of Fellowships in 2001. In 2006 the Office of Fellowships changed its title to the Office of Research Training and Services but several years later, in 2008, the title of Office of Fellowships was reinstated because it better reflected the core activities of the office and its role as a focal point for research fellowships. In 2011 the Office of Fellowships was renamed the Office of Fellowships and Internships, which has the central management and administrative responsibility for the Institution's fellowship and internship programs, and other scholarly appointments. It seeks to facilitate the Smithsonian's relations with students and scholars at universities, museums and research institutions around the world. The Office reports to the Deputy Secretary for Collections and Interdisciplinary Support.
Gretchen Gayle Ellsworth was the first Director of the Office, serving from 1978 to 1984. Roberta W. Rubinoff served as Acting Director, 1984-1986, and Director, 1986-2001. Catherine F. Harris served as Acting Director, 2001-2003, and Director, 2003-2012. Mary R. Tanner was appontment Acting Director in 2012, and Eric Woodard, Director, 2012- . Elizabeth Veatch served as Assistant Director, 1986-1996.
