Smithsonian Diretory, 1970-1980
The Office of Academic Studies was created in 1964 as the Office of Education and Training. In 1968 it was renamed as the Office of Academic Programs and the Office of Academic Studies in 1971. The office made Smithsonian resources available to the scholarly community by providing research opportunities to scholars and graduate students. It was also involved in exhibtions and public education efforts of the Institution. It was merged into a new Office of Fellowships and Grants in 1978.
Charles Blitzer was Director of the Office until 1968, when he was succeeded by Philip C. Ritterbush. From 1970 to 1978 the office was jointly managed by Edward S. Davidson, Administrative Officer and Gretchen Gayle Ellsworth, Program Officer. In 1978 Ellsworth became Director. In 1978 the office was merged into a new unit, the Office of Fellowships and Grants.
