Smithsonian Productions was first established as the Office of Telecommunications in 1976. Before that time, the Office of Public Information, then the Office of Public Affairs coordinated productions. In 1996 it became Smithsonian Productions, reporting to the Smithsonian Press. In 1998 Smithsonian Productions again assumed independent status. The office was the video, audio and multimedia production center for the Smithsonian Institution. Its Directors have been Nazaret Cherkezian, 1976-1986, and, after a vacancy in 1987, Paul B. Johnson, 1988-2002. The office was abolished in February 2002.
