Consists of records documenting the activities and administration of the Smithsonian American Art Museum during the tenures of Deputy Directors Harry Lowe, 1983; Charles J. Robertson, Associate Administrator, 1978-1983, Assistant Director, Resources, and Assistant Director, Museum Resources, 1983-1985, and Deputy Director, 1986-2001; and Rachel M. Allen, Deputy Director, 2002- . Materials include correspondence and memoranda, information files, architectural drawings and other administrative records detailing the Museum's relations among departments, within the Smithsonian, and with non-Smithsonian organizations. Some records were created by Harry Lowe in his capacity as Curator of Exhibits and Curator, Exhibition and Design, 1965-1972; Assistant Director for Operations, 1973-1974; Assistant Director, 1975-1980; Acting Director, 1981; and Assistant Director, 1982.
