Smithsonian Year, 1978-1980
The Department of the History of Technology was created in 1978 from the Department of Science and Technology. The Department consisted of Divisions of Extractive Industries, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, Photographic History, Textiles, and Transportation. Its chairman was John T. Schlebecker. In 1980 the National Museum of American History was created, and the Department was merged into a new Department of the History of Science and Technology at that time.
