The Department of the History of Science was created in 1978 from the Department of Science and Technology. The Department consisted of Divisions of Electricity and Modern Physics, Mathematics, Mechanisms, Medical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. Its chairman was Bernard S. Finn. In 1980 the National Museum of American History was created, and the Department was merged into a new Department of the History of Science and Technology at that time.
