The activities of this office date back to 1958, when William E. Boyle was appointed Administrative Assistant in what was then called the Museum of History and Technology (MHT). Boyle became Administrative Officer for the Museum in 1963, retaining that post until 1965. In 1963, Virginia Beets joined Boyle as an Administrative Officer, and succeeded him as head of the office in 1966.
Robert G. Tillotson joined the staff in 1967 as Administrative Officer. In December 1969, Tillotson became Assistant Director for Administration, serving until 1979. Ronald E. Becker served as Assistant Director for Administration, 1981-1991, and was succeeded by Elizabeth E. Greene, 1992-1994. In 1995 the position was named the Associate Director for Administrative and Automation Services, held by Dennis S. Dickinson, 1995- .
The incumbent is generally responsible for overseeing budget and financial planning, personnel, information resources management, contracting, procurement, and building management for the National Museum of American History.
