Smithsonian Staff Directory, 1994-1999
Prior to the early 1960s, the education/information mission of the NZP was primarily carried out by the staff of the Office of the Director. In 1962, Marion P. McCrane, a zoologist, was hired to head the Information and Education Section. Duties of the Section included signage and labels; dissemination of information on the zoo and its programs; and service as NZP liaison with the media. Sybil E. Hamlet was named Acting Head of the section after McCrane resigned in 1969. In 1972, the Division of Interpretation was created to administer the public service activities of the NZP. Saul W. Schiffman was appointed Chief. The new division's duties were expanded to include exhibit production. In 1974, the Office of Education and Information was established (the Office of Education after 1978), and Judith White was named Chief, 1974-1994. After 1994, the office became known as the Department of Interpretive Programs. The Associate Director for Interpretive Programs was David M. Jenkins, 1994-1999. After 1999, it appears that the Office of Education ceased to exist.
