The National Museum of the American Indian was created by Act of Congress in 1989. In 1990 W. Richard West was appointed its first Director, and Dave Warren was made Deputy Director in that same year, serving through 1991. Douglas E. Evelyn was appointed in 1992 and served 1992-2005. After the retirement of Evelyn in 2005, the Office of the Deputy Director was abolished and the National Museum of the American Indian underwent a reorganization in 2006. The Office of the Deputy Director was restablished in or around 2014 after a reorganizaton and Machel Monenerkit served as Deputy Director until becoming Acting Director of the museum in 2021.
