Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, 1989
The Registrar's Office is responsible for preserving the documentation of the Museum's collections. It also operates a program for lending works of art to various government offices and departments and coordinates exhibitions prepared by the Museum.
The Office of the Registrar was established in 1965. Prior to that time registrarial duties were performed by the Registrar of the United States National Museum. In 1990 the Office was renamed the Office of Registration and Collections Management. In or around 2002, the Office of Registration and Collections Management changed its name to the Registrar's Office. Marjorie S. Zapruder served as Registrar, 1965-1967; Elizabeth Strassmann, 1967-1973; W. Robert Johnston, 1974-1989; and Melissa L. Kroning, 1990- .
