The Office of Registration and Collections Management is responsible for preserving the documentation of the Museum's collections. It also operates a program for lending works of art to various government offices and departments and coordinates exhibitions prepared by the Museum.
The Office of the Registrar for the National Museum of American Art was established in 1965. Prior to that time registrarial duties were performed by the Registrar of the United States National Museum. In 1990 the Office was given its present name. Marjorie S. Zapruder served as Registrar, 1965-1967; Elizabeth Strassmann, 1967-1973; W. Robert Johnston, 1974-1989; and Melissa L. Kroning, 1990- .
