Guide to the Smithsonian Archives, 1996
The Department of Painting and Sculpture was begun by the appointment of Richard P. Wunder as Curator of Painting and Sculpture in 1964. The Department was created in 1967 and Wunder resigned the following year. In 1970 the Department was divided into two new Departments, Contemporary Art (Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture after 1974) and Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Painting and Sculpture. In 1984 those two departments were again joined under the old name, Painting and Sculpture. In 1989 the Department of Painting and Sculpture and the Department of Graphic Arts were combined to form the Curatorial Department, subsequently the Curatorial Office.
In addition to Wunder the staff of Painting and Sculpture has included Harry Rand, Curator, 1984- ; Virginia M. Mecklenburg, Curator, 1984-1987 and Curator in Charge, 1987-1989; William H. Truettner, Curator, 1984-1989; Robin Bolton-Smith, Associate Curator, 1984-1989; Lynda Roscoe Hartigan, Associate Curator, 1988-1989; and Jacqueline Days Serwer, Associate Curator, 1989.
