Summary:
Consists of records documenting the administration of the National Museum Act Program by the office of the Assistant Secretary for Museums during the tenure of Tom L. Freudenheim, 1985-1991. The National Museum Act was passed by Congress in 1966 and enabled the Smithsonian to provide assistance to other museums and museum-related organizations. The Act was funded for the first time in 1971 with a $600,000 appropriation. The Program was abolished in 1986 with the repeal of the Act. Materials include correspondence, memoranda, internship records, grant records, proposals, financial records, informational materials, and brochures. Records dated prior to 1985 were created by Paul N. Perrot, Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, 1972-1983; and, William N. Richards, Acting Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, 1983-1986.
