The preceding three paintings are by Hasenclever, for whose fame they laid the foundation. Their idea is taken from a popular German poem, called the "Jobsiade," caricaturing the career of a German student and German Universities, sixty years ago. No. 4 is the sketch of a larger painting, with more figures, which latter has acquired a European reputation. It could not be included in this exhibition, being under the hands of an engraver in Europe. The impression underneath shows the progress of the plate, which will be finished in the course of this spring. Subscriptions for impressions will be received at the exhibition-room. The arrival of the original paintings is shortly expected. [P. 8; see entries 05160003 and 05160004 for other works noted in this commentary.]
