"'Preparations for a retreat commenced immediately. It was executed in the face of many obstacles. The horses were few and weak, and the men were obliged to assist in dragging the cannon over a broken road. Col. Washington set a worthy example to his officers, by feeding his horse with public stores, going on foot, and paying the soldiers a reward for carrying his baggage. in two days they all got back to fort necessity.'"
