This is a beautiful specimen, of the chaste pencil of the master. The painting is extremely delicate: the attitudes graceful and natural. It is more chaste in outline, and more feeling than Rubens. The St. John is extremely beautiful in expression. This, like many of Vandycke's, is from a study of Rubens, wherein he has reduced all grossness of outline, and added more refinement to the composition. [P. 29.]
