"Michael Angelo Amerighi da Caravaggio. (see no. 581.) St. Sebastian. 53 x 40. This is a strong example of this master's style. The saint has just been taken from the tree to which he was bound, and the arrows with which he was transfixed for his constancy to the Christian faith are being withdrawn from his body by irene, the widow of one of his martyred friends, and her daughters. St. Sebastian was an officer in the army of the emperor Diocletian, in the fourth century." (see serial 04120407 for commentary on artist)
