Here, also, is the interior of a guard room, in which are sitting three soldiers around an empty hogshead. The middle character appears to be spinning a long story to his companions, one of whom he has put to sleep, while the other is showing his impatience by rolling the empty mugs and tankard about the top of the hogshead; but the unmerciful bore shows no inclination to break up the party, notwithstanding his comrade has put his on and taken up his cane. The one on the left wearied with waiting, has rested his hat on his knee, and with his pipe clenched in his mouth has fallen asleep. Out side the door on the left, in deep shadow, may be seen a sentinel on duty. These two pictures are painted in a strong, bold manner, with much freedom. The drawing is accurate, and the positions easy and natural. [P. 7; see entry 03490012 for companion piece.]
