This remarkable picture was more than forty years in the Uselino collection, at Amsterdam, and has always been recognized as one of the most precious works of that well-known collection. The purity and perfect condition of the painting bear evidence of the great care with which it has been preserved. Kobell is said to have approached more closely to the wonderful finish and charming color of Paul Potter than any other master, and, although a little below in strength and power, yet in composition, richness and luxuriance--always representing nature in her happiest moods--he has no superior.
