To the ordinary observer little difference will be discerned between this and a New England landscape, but it is essentially European, and will be recognized as such by every judge of art. The peculiar humidity of atmosphere and clarity of color will assist the amateur in deciding the locale of the landscape. It is perhaps the best commendation of the picture that it is universal in character. [Pp. 21-22.]
