Of Pennsylvania--was a Member of Congress at the declaration of the American Independence, 1776; elected Financier by Congress, 1781: in which station he continued during the war, and frequently interposed his private credit for the service of his country; was member of the Federal Convention, 1787; and afterwards elected Senator of the United States; declined any longer continuance in public life, 1795.
