McDonnough receiving the sword from the British Lieutenant. This painting represents the quarterdeck of the Saratoga at the time the British officers are delivering their swords. In the centre of the picture, Captain Pring is presenting his sword to Commodore McDonough, on the left of Captain Pring, is Lieutenant Robinson--Lieutenant McGee has his back towards the spectators, and Lieutenant Hicks his hand upon his chain. Lieutenant Fitzpatrick and Lieutenant Giles of the marines are in red; the young men behind them are Midshipmen. The American officers are Lieutenant Valette, on the Commodore's right, and Sailing Master Braum with the trumpet under his arm; behind him, is Lieutenant Montgomery who lost his arm on board the President. Captain Young of marines is beckoning to Montgomery to come forward and receive the swords from the Commodore. Lieutenant Howell of the marines is on the left of Captain Young, with his head inclined a little forward; and Mr. Beale, the purser, in a round hat, behind the Commodore.
