"nos. 40 and 41. The first, a view of the middle ferry over the Schuylkill. The other, a view of Lancaster - both by Beck - faithful representations, but destitute of minute beauties of circumstantial finishing which is so grateful to the eye." [P. 298; Gottesman adds in footnote:]_ "George Beck (1748 or '50-1812) was an English-born landscape painter who came to America in 1795, and for the next dozen years worked mainly in Baltimore and Philadelphia, then moved to Kentucky."
