Hart, William.--Born in Paisley, Scotland. Came to the U.S. with his parents, in 1831, at nine years of age, was apprenticed to a coach maker at Albany, N.Y., and drew attention for his skill in ornamenting panels. He acquired great dexterity in the use of colors, and for some time was noted for the landscapes he painted on window shades. He afterwards came to Michigan, and was a traveling portrait-painter for three years, when by the assistance of a gentleman of Albany he was enabled to go to Europe, whence he returned with many sketches and much improved in his art. His landscapes are much sought for, and are bringing him wealth and fame. [Appendix.]
