"At my final admission into the printing house, I took to working at the press, imagining I felt a want of the bodily exercise I had been used to in America, where the presswork is mixed with the composing. I drank only water; the other men were great drinkers of beer. They wondered from this and several other instances that the 'Water American,' as they called me, was stronger than themselves who drank strong beer."--Vide Autobiography. [P. 6; price noted by a contemporary hand.]
