Pastoral scene--evening. The principal part of the picture is occupied by a fertile valley adorned with stately trees, and intersected by a stream which rises among the mountains at the right, down the sides of which it falls with a succession of cascades. On the table land above the valley, stands a Doric temple, before which sacrifices are being performed. Beyond and above this, on the right, the ragged peaks of the mountains stretch up with their fantastic outlines into the pure sky. Below the table land a bridge crosses the stream, over which horsemen are passing. At the left of the picture is a long avenue of luxuriant over-arching trees, beneath which a woman is dancing, while others play upon instruments or recline in the cool shadows. In the central distance are seen the towers of a city, and beyond are mountains. [P. 4.]
