Received second class medal (Genre et Paysage) 1849; and first class medal 1857 and 1861. [P. 8.] This picture was exhibited for the first time in the Paris Exhibition of 1858. In executing it, Courbet's main object was to demonstrate in what way nude figures could be reconciled to the representation of modern customs. [P. 9.]
