Appears in exhibition catalog as entry no. 39
39, 40, 41, 42. These are the originals of those four pictures of Geo. C. Bingham, his three American Election pictures, and his Jolly Flat-boatmen, which have, by their life and fidelity, taken such a hold on the imagination of our country, and are so widely known through engravings, which bear such an unusual proportion to the originals in size and execution, as to produce almost an equal pleasure. In the first series, we need scarcely point out the progressive subjects: No. 39 is Stump-Speaking; No. 40 is the Voting; No. 41 is the Annunciation of the Vote. As compositions, though wanting in gaity and vigor such as those of Hogarth, it is impossible to deny them great originality and strict fidelity. The separate subject, No. 42, possesses not a little of the merit most wanting in the others; it is touched off with a true rollicking air, that breathes all the old spirit of those who were our Argonauts of the West, the cruise of our arks and broad-horns. [P. 13; see entries 09710037, 09710038, and 09710039 for other works noted in this commentary.]
