The whole of Christendom was threatened, in the years 1570 and 1571, by the warlike preparations of Selim the Second, King of Turkey, for an invasion, . . . This painting of great merit, was taken from the Mission of San Ignacio, whose walls it had been adorning since the year 1728, when that temple was inaugurated by the Jesuits. Nothing need be said of the celebrity of the work, after seeing the name of the artist on its margin. [Pp. 14-16; excerpted from a detailed description of the historical event depicted in the work.]
