An entire family in the northern part of Germany have been compelled, by the rising flood, to seek refuge on a structure of planks in the garret of their dwelling. The mother who a few days previous has borne a child, is nursing her boy. She is surrounded by her four children and her grandmother. One of the girls, who has mounted on a basket and is held by her brother, is looking through an opening in the wall. She perceives a boat which is coming in search of them, and cries out to her family that they are saved. It is this well chosen moment that affords the artist the most touching and beautiful subject which he has here so admirably portrayed. [P. 9.]
