A picture of singular effect. The figures in this piece are truly characteristic of rustic life, and nothing can be finer than the fond anxious expression of the cow separated from her calf. This is an admired work of David Teniers the son, who ranks in the first class of the Flemish artists; and for his faithful representations of scenes and characters in familiar life, for freedom and neatness of execution, and brilliance and beauty of colour, remains without a rival.--He was born at Antwerp in 1610, and died at Brussels in 1694, aged 84.
