"By Vandervelde, (Adrian), born 1639, died 1672. " This much admired picture formerly belonged to a celebrated gallery, from which the present owner purchased it, at a great price. The colouring is excellent, the touch free, the trees natural, and the leaves wonderfully made out; the sky is brilliant, and perspective excellent; the old building is going to decay. " Vandervelde painted entirely from nature; and having been born and brought up in amsterdam, it is not be wondered at why he took so much pains in the execution of this subject. His pictures are scarce, and sell for high prices in Europe." [P. 20-21.]
