"By Carlo Maratti, born 1628, died 1713. " This appears to be an original sketch by that great master, and was highly valued by its previous owner. " 'Maratti's manner of designing was grand, and his mode of thinking and composing truly noble as well as judicious. His ordonnances were rich and magnificent, and his expression lively and affecting. many of his pictures at this day appear rather too strongly tinted with red, which takes off considerable from the lustre of his colouring. While he was alive his works sold at prodigious prices, and they still retain their value in all parts of Europe.' " The subject now before us found its way to the United States during the former revolution, and has been owned in Philadelphia almost ever since." [P. 14.]
