"Master unknown. Whether by Spangnolet or not, it is a good painting; and although the late worthy Dr. S.L. Mitchill never sat for it, it partakes so much of a likeness, that the present proprietor has adopted it, and nothing short of a 'good round sum' would induce him to part with it. When properly cleaned, the resemblance would even be greater. One of the best portrait painters in this country actually believed it was painted for him. There cannot be much doubt that it was taken from some relative of that great man, more than 200 years ago, as evident marks of antiquity are stamped upon the face of it. It is certainly a great curiosity, and is so offered." [P. 11.]
