Educational Notes:
Fires are great for a lot things such as cooking food, staying warm when it’s cold out, or for making s’mores! However, when a fire grows out-of-control, it can cause a lot of damage. Fires don’t just happen where there are people, though. In nature, wildfires are natural disasters that can be destructive for animals, land, and people and their homes if the fire continues to spread. Wildfires can happen when something happens unexpectedly like lava or lightning catching the ground on fire, but typically, wildfires can be traced back to people, who caused them either by accident or on purpose. The risk of wildfires happening increases a lot in dryer climates and during droughts. One of the biggest problems with any type of fire is the rate at which they spread. Fire can spread and destroy what’s in their path quickly if people, like firefighters, don’t intervene to contain and put out the fire. So, any time you strike a match to light a candle inside or sit around the campfire with your s’more outside, be careful and make sure the flames are fully extinguished before you leave.
