Abraham Walkowitz moved to New York City from Siberia at age nine. The people and places of New York inspired him, and although his art was representational, it had an expressionistic, slightly abstract quality. Walkowitz displayed his work at the 291 Gallery, a popular meeting place for artists and art lovers, including William Zorach. Zorach loved creative people, and Walkowitz was one of his closest friends.
