The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers commissioned this relief to honor Charles Frederic Rand. It accompanies an award for excellence in mine administration, which was Rand’s expertise. Rand was president of the institute for a one-year term in 1913. Anthony de Francisci created this plaster relief to confirm the design of the finished work, which was reduced and replicated in bronze as late as 1930 (see 1966.110.24).
