Description:
As its common name indicates, Angraecum longicalcar is thought to have the longest nectar spur of any orchid. Sadly, very few of these orchids are left in the wild, and it is thought its pollinator may be extinct. This orchid is threatened by fires and illegal collection for local and international sale. We received our Angraecum longicalcars from conservations centers to assist with ex situ conservation. The famous Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew are working on a program reintroducing seedlings to the wild. With a lot of hard work, endangered species can recover, but it is always easier to not put them in danger in the first place.
Pollination Syndrome:
Moth (?). Pollinator has not been found yet, but it is assumed to be a moth. The pollinator may be extinct.
