Description:
The Postal Service issued a 39-cent Judy Garland commemorative stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) pane of twenty stamps on June 10, 2006, in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, New York. Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland, designed the stamp.
With this twelfth stamp in the Legends of Hollywood series, the US Postal Service honors Judy Garland (1922-1969), considered by many to be one of the greatest entertainers of the twentieth century.
Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp using a portrait of Garland by Tim O'Brien, an artist living in Brooklyn, New York. This portrait is based on a publicity photo for "A Star Is Born," the 1954 film for which Garland received an Academy Award nomination for best actress. A reproduction of Garland's signature appears at the bottom of the stamp. The photograph on the selvage shows her in another signature role, as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz."
The Banknote Corporation of America, Inc./SSP printed the 75 million stamps in the offset process with the microprint "USPS."
