Description:
A 30-cent regular stamp honoring the centennial of Frank Laubach's birth was issued September 2, 1984, in Benton, Pennsylvania, his birthplace. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the Benton Area Junior-Senior High School.
Dr. Frank C. Laubach - innovative and tireless educator, author, teacher and missionary - devoted his life to teaching primitive and illiterate people. His "Each One Teach One" reading method, which used phonetic symbols and picture-word-syllable charts, has been translated into more than 300 languages.
Dr. Laubach wrote more than thirty-five books and a number of articles and pamphlets on his missionary and teaching experiences. He also served as an advisor to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Peace Corps, and numerous other government and private agencies worldwide.
The Frank Laubach stamp was the latest addition to the Great Americans Series.
Richard Sparks of Norwalk, Connecticut, designed the stamp. It was printed in the intaglio process and issued in panes of 100. The art director and typographer was Howard Paine; engravers were Thomas J. Bakos (lettering and numerals) and Gary Chaconas (vignette)
